"The Hangover Part III" (2013) – Movie Story Summary

Directed by: Todd Phillips
Genre: Comedy / Action
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, John Goodman

🟨 Overview:

Unlike the first two films, The Hangover Part III doesn’t follow a blackout mystery. Instead, it’s a darker, more action-driven story that wraps up the trilogy. The Wolfpack must track down the unpredictable Mr. Chow — and this time, they’re doing it sober.

🟫 Plot Summary:

🔹 The Setup:

Alan is off his meds and spiraling out of control after the death of his father. His friends — Phil, Stu, and Doug — stage an intervention and decide to drive him to a rehab facility.

But on the way, their van is attacked by a gangster named Marshall (played by John Goodman). He’s furious because Mr. Chow stole $21 million in gold bars from him. Marshall kidnaps Doug, and gives the Wolfpack an ultimatum:

“Find Chow and bring him to me — or Doug dies.”

🔹 The Hunt for Chow:

The trio follows clues and learns:

  • Chow recently escaped from a Thai prison.

  • He’s hiding out in Tijuana, Mexico, running a criminal operation.

  • Chow tricks them into helping him break into a mansion and steal gold (from Marshall).

But Chow double-crosses them and escapes with the gold, leaving them to deal with Marshall.

🔹 Back to Las Vegas:

The chase leads them back to Las Vegas, where it all began. Chow is staying at Caesars Palace, living lavishly. The Wolfpack pulls off a clever plan to capture him and return him to Marshall.

But in a final twist, Chow kills Marshall and escapes again.

🟩 Ending:

  • Doug is saved.

  • Alan decides to grow up and joins a rehab program.

  • At the very end, Alan meets a woman named Cassandra and begins a new relationship.

🔻 Post-Credit Scene:

A surprise scene shows the morning after Alan and Cassandra’s wedding — and another wild night. Stu wakes up with breasts, and chaos has struck again — a callback to the original formula.

🎭 Themes & Tone:

  • More serious and emotional than the first two

  • Focuses on Alan’s personal growth

  • Mixes crime caper elements with dark comedy

  • Closes the trilogy with finality, but keeps its signature absurdity
